Pelling

Pelling is about 133 km away from Siliguri and 125 km from Gangtok and well connected by bus and jeep services. Placid Pelling pulls most of the visitors for its representative status in history, nature and culture of the state. Situated at an altitude of 6,800 ft, including the Koktang, Kumbhakarna, Rathong, Kabru, Dom, Khangchendzonga, Pandim, Zopuno, Shimbho, Narsing, Siniyalchu and others.

Pelling itself consists of little more than a road junction, Helicopter pad and numerous hotels, creating the so-called "Bengali Boulevard", a strip of highly unimaginative identikit concrete blocks. Luckily, from most angles this development is hidden by the forested slopes and Pelling offers numerous attractive walks and hotel terraces from where one can gaze in awe at the world's third highest peak.

Pelling gives a spectacular views of the Mount Khangchendzonga, the Guardian Deity of Sikkim and the worlds third highest mountain along with other sister mountains bowing before the Godly figure in reverence. Pelling is an ideal getaway for tourists as its vicinity has numerous waterfalls, soft trek routes, villages and soothing atmosphere for all discerning.

Pemayangtse Monastery
Pemayangtse is a premier monastery situated at Geyzing in West Sikkim District, around 140 km from Gangtok. With a view of Mount Kanchenjunga, it follows the Nyingmapa sect of the Tibetan Buddhism and the monks of Pemayangtse are usually from Bhutia families. 108 monks are present in this monastery. Built in the 18th century AD, it is the oldest monastery that houses priceless thankas, icons, Buddhist texts, paintings and frescos.

Changey Waterfalls
Changey Waterfalls is a breathtaking waterfall on the western slope of Pelling, a little town in West Sikkim District. The famous Sangachoeling Monastery is near the waterfall.

Sanga Chelling Monastery
Sanga Chelling Monastery, situated about 7 km from Pemayangtse, is one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim. Sanga Chelling means 'the island of esoteric teaching'. Built in 1697, this monastery is highly venerated among the Nyingmapas. It also houses some of the original clay statues.

Khecheopalri Lake
Khecheopalri Lake is around 33 km from Pemayangtse in West Sikkim District. Also known as the wishing lake, this lake is located in the midst of a dense forest. It is considered to be sacred both by the Buddhist and the Hindus. Prayers are allowed around it.

Kahgchenjunga Waterfall
At a distance of 25 KM from Pelling it will take nearly one and half hour including the half hour stay at Sewaro Rock garden. You need to climb up little in steps to reach the foot of the water fall. This water fall is last but one point in your drive for local site seeing in Pelling. After this you will return to Y junction and go towards Khechopalri wiching Lake. Take care of your vehicle as there is no open parking space and stones may fall from heights.

Darap valley
On your way to other site seeing point you will pass through this valley which will fall in your right side. Darap village is promoted by tourism department for village tourism.

Rembi Waterfall
On the way at a distance of 11 KM from Pelling this water fall is just 2 KM before the Sewaro Rock garden. This one not so big water fall compared to other water falls.

Singshore Bridge Monastery
Built in 1697 AD, Singshore Bridge Monastery is situated on a ridge above Pelling and the famous Pemayangtse Monastery. It is considered as one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim. In order to reach this monastery one has to walk up the steep hilly slope which leads through rich forest covers.Singshore Bridge Monastery celebrates Bumchu Festival every year. During the festival, devotees from far and near gather to get the blessing of the holy water. The sacred holy water is taken out once a year on this auspicious occasion of Bumchu.
Pelling enjoys a gentle, moderate climate all year through. Mercury levels range from an average maximum of 22°C in summer (March to June) to an minimum of 4°C in winter during December to February. Observed maximum temperature during summer rarely crosses 28°C. Intense rainfalls in monsoon (July to September) causes landslides in this region. July month records maximum rainfalls.
By Air:
The nearest airport is Bagdogra near Siliguri. This airport is connected to Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati. International travelers can get connecting flights from Kolkata or Delhi. Both are well connected with many cities in India and abroad.

By Railway:
Out-station trains (Indian Railways) generally come into either New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri. From there, visitors may proceed to Pelling by "Toy-Train" (journey time 6.5 to 7 hrs) or bus or taxi, Limo Van or Land Rover (journey time 3 to 3.5 hrs) to Pelling.

By Road:
Pelling is connected with all weather metaled road with Siliguri, Kalimpong, Gangtok etc. Tourist Cars, Tourist mini coaches and Taxis are available for transfer of passengers between Pelling and Siliguri/New Jalpaiguri Junction/ Bagdogra, and also for sightseeing at fixed rates and may be reserved through Tourist Bureau, Govt. of West Bengal, Pelling.

Local Transport:
Shared jeeps travel regularly until mid or late afternoon between Pelling and Ghezing; twice daily for Gangtok, and once a day for Siliguri. There is no direct service to Yoksum from Pelling but a daily bus leaves Ghezing and travels via Legship and Tashiding. One bus leaves Ghezing daily for Khecheopalri Lake and passes through Pelling, and two leave Pelling for Ghezing, and eventually back to Pelling.
