Srinagar
This summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir is in the wish list of many travellers, who want to see the beauty that Kashmir stands for. A paradise on earth, Srinagar was under the dark veil of militancy for over 15 years that ensured not many people visit this region. Srinagar was once the popular location for filming romantic Bollywood songs. Srinagar lies in Kashmir Valley and is located on the banks of the Jhelum. Srinagar is about 300 km north of Jammu, the winter capital of the state. The city is located at an altitude of 1730 meters above sea level. The very mention of the word Srinagar brings images of the Dal Lake, house boats, dry fruits and Kashmiri carpets. The word Srinagar has come from two Sanskrit words – Sri (meaning abundance & wealth) and Nagar (meaning a city). Thus Srinagar etymologically signifies a place of wealth.

Founded around 150 AD by King Pravarasen II, Srinagar is placed on the banks of the river Jhelum Srinagar is a unique city with beautiful lakes like Dal, nagin and Anchar. Vividly beautiful multi-colored houseboats swinging in the Dal Lake and amazing Himalaya's snow covered mountains makes Srinagar a special attraction wherein no tourist can miss.

The landscaped Mughal Gardens, developed by the rulers of the Mughal dynasty, make you fall in love with their beauty. They consist of mainly the following three gardens:
• Chashmashahi Garden
• Nishat Garden
• Shalimar Garden
Dal Lake
Srinagar sightseeing loses its meaning if you have not visited the Dal Lake. With the backdrop of mountains on three sides, the view of the Dal Lake looks as if you are watching a photograph. This lake counts amongst the most splendid lakes in the country. One of the major attractions of the Dal Lake is the houseboats that stand lining its edges.
Nagin Lake
Another popular tourist attraction of Srinagar is the Nagin Lake. Placid water of the lake, surrounded with manicured flowerbeds and groves of chinar, poplar and willow, is enough to capture your heart.
Shankaracharya Temple
Perched on the Takht-e-Suleiman hill, the Shankaracharya Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is supposed to be the oldest shrine of the Kashmir valley.
Hazratbal Shrine
Situated opposite the Nishat Bagh on the banks of Dal Lake, the Hazratbal Shrine houses the Moi-e-Muqqadus (preserved sacred hair) of Prophet Mohammad. It is one of the most popular shrines in Srinagar, revered by Hindus as well as Muslims.

Srinagar has only two climates, a pleasant summers and a very chilly, freezing winters. Rainfalls are very scanty here. Summers are from April to September with a maximum temperature of 33°C and a minimum well below 10°C. October to March accounts for winters with minimum consistently well below 0°C and maximum only about 15°C. Winters are associated with heavy snowfalls.
Winters are excellent for snow capped mountains and scenic beauties. Keep thick woolen clothes during winter. Summers are excellent for visiting the lakes and beautiful gardens. Natural beauty is at its pinnacle during summers.

Srinagar domestic airport is connected with many airports in major cities in India. Regular flights are operated between Srinagar and Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh and Shimla. International travelers get the connecting flights from Delhi International airport, which is at a distance of 876 km from Srinagar.
By Railway:
Jammu is the nearest railway station to Srinagar, which is at a distance of 290 km. Jammu railway station is well connected to all major cities in India by rail. Direct train services are available from Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Trivandrum. Taxi services are available from Jammu to Srinagar and the fare is about Rs 6000.
By Road:
