Gulmarg

Gulmarg literally means meadow of flowers. It is a majestic hill station in the district of Baramula of Jammu and Kashmir in India. The hill station, at an altitude of 2730 m, was earlier known as Gaurimarg, where Gauri stands for Goddess Parvati the wife of Lord Shiva. The name Gulmarg was given to this place by the King Yousuf Shah Chak.

Nestled with stunning peaks in the Himalayan ranges, Gulmarg is a spectacular picnic spot attracted by all kinds of tourists with its lush green backdrop, beautiful landscapes, flowering gardens, serene lakes and pleasant climate during the summers and falls.

Khilanmarg
It abounds in beauty and is home to some of the best skiing slopes. Primarily a valley, this is situated 6 kilometers away from Gulmarg bus stop. The steep climb finally pays off with the Himalayan ranges of Nanga Parbat to the twin peaks of Nun and Kun in the South East gleaming right before your eyes.

Alpather Lake
It lies 13 kilometers away from Gulmarg at the base of the Apharwat peaks. This notable alpine lake remains frozen till late in June and makes for a great picnic spot.

Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve
It is the best place to explore the Gulmarg wildlife. Situated 48 kilometers away from Srinagar, this reserve is home to a number of migratory birds and animals like Red Fox, Himalayan Musk Deer and Bear.

Shrine of Baba Reshi
It is a holy place that is visited by devotees from all religions. Finally, capture Gulmarg from the skies by taking a ride up the Gondola Lift.
Gulmarg is a perfect tourist destination for all seasons. It has refreshing summer (March-May) with a temperature band of 13°C and 29°C. Winter during November to February is cool and pleasant with temperature ranging between 2°C to 9°C. Severe snow fall is a feature of this place. Moderate rainfall occurs here during monsoon.

The winter season is very good for Snow boarding and long-run Skiing.

Best season is from March to October. Visit in winters to participate in sports activities.
By Air:
Nearest airport to Gulmarg is Srinagar which is 56 km away from Gulmarg. Jeeps and Taxi cabs are available from airport to Gulmarg, which will cost around Rs 1000 – Rs 1200. Srinagar is well connected to Delhi with daily regular flights. Many other Indian cities are also connected to Srinagar by air.

By Railway:
Closest Railhead from Gulmarg is Jammu. Jammu is connected by rail to many cities in India; especially direct trains are available from northern cities.

By Road:
Gulmarg is well linked by bus services from most of the cities in Jammu and Kashmir. State owned buses and Private tourist deluxe luxury buses are also available to reach Gulmarg from various parts of J&K.
